Ms. Zehra's Kindergarten Class

Stories Unit:

We are thoroughly enjoying our stories from around the world. The Golden dragons have been looking at literature from different countries. We are also focusing on some finer elements of literature. Identifying the setting of the story, the characters and the sequence of events has been a good learning experience for the class. Next we will be exploring different ways to tell stories. Here are some photos of the children drawing and writing about one of the books that we read.

Communities unit:

All the students around the 5 kindergarten classes have been getting some personal information together. You can see a lot of it already displayed on the bulletin boards in the hallway. This brings to the forefront the knowledge that we are all part of a congenial community and within the community we have certain similarities and differences which all contribute to making us unique and special.

Song of the week:

This is personally my favorite day of the year! Thanks for making it so special dear parents. It was wonderful to see all the children in their finery. We got some great photos so enjoy…..

Thank you wonderful parents of the Golden Dragons class!! International Day just does so much to bring together the many diverse cultures represented here at ISM. Thanks to all of you who managed to take out the time to visit our classroom and share a little bit of your unique language and culture with the Golden dragons. We got to hear many lovely stories in French, Japanese, Danish, English, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean and Tagalog. What a rich variety!!!! The special flag making activity, cooking rice krispies and making Origami were such a treat for all of us. Thank you all!

Student led conferences were a great opportunity for the children to celebrate their learning at school with their families. Thank you for taking out the time to share the joy of learning with the Golden Dragons!

Materials and Properties

We have almost come to the end of our unit which was fun and enriching. Alot of science was covered during the past few weeks. Critical thinking, predictions, generating hypotheses and hands-on experimenting were some of the skills experienced and practiced by the Golden Dragons. The children have built some awesome stuff for our class mascot, Fluffy!

International Day and Stories from around the world

As International Day is being celebrated in the school, we will be looking at stories from different countries. Please come in and share what you may have that is unique from your country of nationality or somewhere you may have lived. We would love to hear different languages!!

Literacy

Reading / writing is coming along fantastically for our Golden Dragons. A number of sight words have been looked at. Here is a list: of, the, to, do, look, they, my, this, is, said, on, I, go, we, she, little, am, look, you, all, what, why, are, he, see. Reading is being enjoyed in class and we are keen to develop a love of literature above anything else. So keep reading those books to your child every day!!

Songs of the week

Sports day was enjoyed by one and all. The Golden Dragons not only practiced their gross motor skills but many essential qualities and Trans-disciplinary skills were also brought to the forefront. Team work, turn taking and sportsmanship were some of these, just to name a few.

Our song of the week:

A lot  going on in the Kindergarten classrooms. We have been spending lots of time on some great numeracy activities. Addition with concrete counters was the focus for the week. Math rotations were fun!!

For the Materials unit we have been doing many science experiments. You can see the on going learning on our classroom walls. The latest was to test various objects and materials to see if they were water proof or not…

This week all the classes in Kindergarten held a rotation to celebrate the 100 awesome days at school. All the children were divided into four groups who got to experience different math related activities with various teachers. This was also a great chance for them to mingle with children from other classes in a setting other than the playground.

Unit of inquiry:

Materials and their properties is the new unit of Inquiry for the Golden Dragons. Thanks for sending in the various materials so we could explore and sort these. We commenced the unit by predicting what might happen to certain objects if they fall from a height. Later all the Kindergarten classes got together to actually carry out this experiment to find out with Mr. Steve. Here are the Golden Dragons and their friends exploring, thinking, predicting and inquiring into the subject!

Grade 9 Buddies:

Grade 9 friends are planning on writing a book for their special friends in Kindergarten. We had them visit us to interview and find out what interests the Golden Dragons…..

Song of the week:

Focus on Math:

A few times a week the Golden dragons get to choose from all sorts of mathematics activities and games. Mostly these are very hands-on which of course is helpful to internalize the relevant concept. Numbers can be fun!!
